About

Who are The Mechanical Bulls?

We, The Mechanical Bulls, are a group of students, mentors, and parents from Smithtown, New York who are dedicated to spreading the message of FIRST within our community. The team was founded in September 2001, and in every winter since, has competed in the FIRST Robotics Competition under the identification number 810. Each January, we receive a game. Then, in six and a half weeks, we have to design, engineer, construct, and program a robot that can outperform other teams’ robots in this game. Each March, we participate in competitions, sometimes traveling several states away to compete! The team is open to all high school students in the area. Email [email protected] if you would like to become a Mechanical Bull!

What is FIRST?

FIRST (For Inspiration & Recognition of Science & Technology) is the non-profit organization that we were created by and compete through. It was founded in 1992 by Dean Kamen, the inventor of–namely–the Segway PT. The aim of FIRST is to inspire interest in STEM and encourage “gracious professionalism:” the idea that even when two groups are in competition, they can help each other succeed. The organization consists of four “leagues” that, together, include over 400,000 students on over 44,000 teams in over 80 countries around the world. Learn more…
